How to Start A Fire With Wet Wood

Image
Article by Campertunity guest blogger: Lisa Vargas, founder of INeedThatToPrep.com. Originally from a small cattle ranch in Madera, California, Lisa is an outdoor enthusiast who grew up fishing, hunting, and hiking.  It’s that time of year again when the weather gets cold and rainy. If you’ve ever tried to start a fire with wet wood, you know how difficult it can be, and maybe you’ve even failed at it a few times (I know I have). Having the ability to start a fire under rainy conditions, or just shortly after, can be a life-saver.  Today, I want to talk about several aspects of how to start a fire using wet wood and some of the things you need to do in order to be able to accomplish your goal. So let’s get started!  Materials You Need For Starting a Fire With Wet Wood 1. Tinder  There are different types of tinder for starting fires. How To Rainproof Your Camping Trip

Image
Just because there’s rain in the forecast doesn’t mean you should cancel your camping trip.  Here’s how to make the best out of your camping trip even when it’s raining like crazy (and you feel like you might go crazy).  Remember your Scout’s training — always be prepared  The first step to camping in the rain is bringing the right gear. You only need a few key items that can be reused during every camping trip, including:  Tarps! They wrap up nicely, so bring multiples — for your tent, for your picnic table, and anything else that might need to stay covered.  If you’re tenting, a poly drop sheet to put under your tent.  Tent fly to protect the roof from the rain. And even if it’s not raining, it will help keep your tent warm at night.

How to camp with kids

Image
With camping season upon us and many families wanting to enjoy the outdoors, we bring you Campertunity’s best tips on how to camp with kids. Camping with kids is an easy way to connect kids with nature while allowing the outdoors to entertain the kids. Packing the right items, having activities to do, and being prepared for nature’s elements will allow a fun time for everyone. So, let’s get into how to camp with kids:  Practice camping at home  Camping with kids starts with setting up the tent in the backyard, living room or even the balcony. Kids love being in a tent and the feel of sleeping in a hut, just like they love building forts. Getting kids comfortable with a tent sleeping environment will get them ready for when they do it in nature, because familiarity creates comfort.

Get-Away to Vancouver Island: Visiting Port Alberni, Sproat Lake and Qualicum Beach

Image
Mini vacations are fun to do, which is why we decided to get away to Port Alberni and Sproat Lake with a stop in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island. Our goal was to do some hiking, find neat places to eat, and check out some campsites.  From North Vancouver, we packed and prepped the essentials, which meant tent, sleeping bags, camping cooking gear and enough entertainment to keep our 8 year old busy in the back seat during our commute. As the summer ends, we make sure our camping gear is only the best, so a stop at Mountain Equipment Co-op is a must before we start our trip. Everything from camping plates to hiking shoes can be found at MEC.

7 Ways To Have An Amazing Camping Experience In The Rain

Image
Camping is an opportunity to unplug from our devices, take a break from our busy, uncertain lives, and experience mindfulness in nature.  While rain may put a damper (pun intended) on some of our more ambitious camping activities like hiking and exploring the forest, it offers a different kind of opportunity — a chance to reconnect, without distraction, with ourselves, our loved ones, and with the wild world that surrounds us.  Here are seven activities that will help you make the most of your rainy-day camping trip:  1. Reconnect with your creative side. Bring colouring books and pencil crayons and let your inner child run free. You can use recyclable materials from your campsite, like pine cones, leaves, or sticks to invent new games and make dolls, dioramas, and other toys. You can also write messages on rocks and hide them around camp for others to find later! 2. Play games.
