  Although many people believe that chemical fertilizers are the ‘necessary evil’ for gardens to grow healthy over a period of time, more and more people are returning to the traditional, and arguably more meticulous approaches of composting.  First and foremost, composting enriches the soil and helps it retain its moisture while suppressing a broad spectrum of plant pests, unlike chemical fertilizers that negatively impact microorganisms that reside within the soil. 

  Tent, sleeping bag, food and flashlight are some of the first things we think of when packing for an overnight camping trip in the wilderness, but new ideas for cool camping gadgets are popping up regularly.  We picked out a few neat gadgets and put them to the test in our latest camping expeditions, and here are our top 3 favourites:

There weren’t any fire bans while camping and no need to restrict our activities. Now, planning a camping trip doesn’t just involve the basics: camping gear, booking a campsite, packing bug spray; it also means adapting to new rules and gadgets so we can still enjoy the outdoors. 

  When camping we all want visceral views, heavenly hikes, wondrous water spots… and comfortable commodes. Toilets are one of the number one things campers are looking for when deciding where to book. Unless they are experienced back country campers and very secure with using a shovel, campers are hoping to have access to a private place for their business. With more and more people exploring the great outdoors – especially families with children – there is a growing trend and need for outhouses, port-o-potties and/or composting toilets.

  A composting toilet is a great way to add toilet facilities to your campsite with minimal cost and effort. Composting toilets break down waste, and what’s left can be used as a soil amendment. Safe use of human waste can be placed in an already existing compost pile, around fruit trees, on lawns and in gardens. (However, please do not use composting toilet waste on any edible plants, vegetables, or herbs.

Camping alone can be a great way to get some alone time and connect with yourself and the environment. But this element of solitude means you need to be extra aware and cautious of your surroundings.
